Questions:
To ask questions, we often use question words. The question word tells the person we are asking what we want to know.
For example Bill has just been on holiday. His friend asks him the same question, but the different question words ask for different information.
Did you go on holiday?
A question without a question word usually asks for a 'yes' or 'no' answer, so Bill says 'Yes.'.
Where did you go on holiday?
'Where' tells Bill his friend wants to know the place he went to, so he says 'Jamaica'.
Why did you go on holiday?
'Why' tells Bill his friend wants to know the reason that he went on holiday, so he says 'I needed a rest'.
When did you go on holiday?
'When' tells Bill his friend wants to know the time that he went, so he says 'A month ago'.
How did you go on holiday?
'How' tells Bill his friend wants to know the method that he used, so he says 'I called my travel agency.'
